String instruments are known in every culture. An instrument falls into this family if it has strings that are stretched under tension, and produce sound by causing the strings to vibrate. This may be done by plucking, strumming, striking, or bowing the strings, or even allowing them to be blown by the wind, as in the case of the Aeolian harp. Common string instruments include the violin, cello, harp and guitar. All of these examples can be plucked or strummed to make a sound, but the violin and cello are examples of instruments that use a bow (generally made of horse hair) to produce music.
A full orchestra will have a section made up of string instruments, generally violins, violas, cellos, double basses and sometimes a harp. String orchestras are also common – these exclude the woodwind, percussion and brass sections of the full orchestra. Guitars are most commonly found in modern rock bands in the form of electric guitars with amplifiers, although the acoustic guitar is a very popular instrument.
