Percussion instruments are those instruments that produce sound by striking, shaking, plucking or scraping. Drum sets fall into this category, as do bells and chimes and cymbals. Percussion instruments are one of the four major sections in the western orchestra and drum sets with cymbals are essential to any modern band.
Percussion instruments have been around for thousands of years in every culture in the world. They have been used in many different ways, such as communicating with neighboring communities, accompanying dance, and facilitating ceremonies and rituals. Now a days they may be divided into 2 categories - pitched and non-pitched. Examples of pitched or tuned instruments are timpani, chimes, or steel drums as they can be pitched or tuned to a key as required. Non-pitched examples are crash cymbals, snare drum or the gong. A drum set is made up of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments.
A typical drum set is made from a kick drum, hi-hat, ride cymbal, sizzle cymbal, snare drum, splash cymbal and tom-toms. Of course you also tend to need accessories with percussion instruments such as drumsticks and cases.
